WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH

Another Rykodisc reissue of a Mothers of Invention classic. Originally released in 1970, it contains a relatively more avant-garde selection of performances from the Mothers of Invention. Track #2, a cover of "Directly From My Heart to You", contains a performance from Don "Sugarcane" Harris on electric violin. Harris also appears on the album Hot Rats on the track "Willie the Pimp".
Unfortunately, my copy is water damaged; the booklet is stuck together and there seems to be some mold growing near Zappa's head on the back. It's a shame I don't own a nicer copy, but on the other hand, if there's one Zappa album I would expect to harbor a life-threatening fungus, it would be Weasels. The album is dark and experimental with an underlying sense of humor throughout. The title track, "Weasels Ripped My Flesh", is an example of an extremely early venture into the type of experimental noise music that is common today. The emotion and tone of the track reminds me of acts like Whitehouse and Throbbing Gristle due to the pure darkness some of their works exude. The rest of the album treats listeners to the snorks of a horny gas mask at high noon, a saxophonist blowing his nose, a venture into the Dwarf Nebula by way of BLURCH INJECTION, and the usual display of The Mothers' exceptional musicianship.
